Window grilles or no window grilles?

I’m very curious to know if

1. you live in a high-rise without window grilles (especially with young children), or

2. you live in a high rise with window grilles and it has actually been useful (saved a life)

It’s so culturally ingrained to have window grilles and the parents have always told me to get them, so the automatic thought is that you need them. And I have young children so their safety is important to me. But after so long, I have never even had any safety incidents despite staying on a really high floor. The kids have zero interest in what’s outside the window, and are very smart about staying away from open windows.

Also, I spoke to a friend with older kids who also survives without window grilles. Her SO is ang moh and he has a completely opposite approach, which is that we should trust kids to do the right thing (quite symbolic of the difference in how East/West govts treat their citizens)

I have also seen neighbours kids treat window grilles like a jungle gym, which is also very dangerous - the grilles are definitely not meant to take the weight of small humans…

I have no intention to keep pets - personally I think pets would probably be the only reason I need grilles (e.g. for putting up catproofing mesh)

And invisible grilles are seriously expensive. I estimate it’s about 2-2.5k to grill up the windows in an average HDB…

Regular grilles look like prison and will ruin the look of my house.

What do the rest of you think?
